Our new (used car) has a stinky a/c..?

We bought a used car and it's great...except...the prior owner was a smoker. The A/C stinks when we turn it on, after it runs for a few minutes either we get used to it or it stops stinking...either way we still have to deal with the old ashtray smell. Any ideas on how to get it smelling a little sweeter?

Jeridee When the a/c isn't be used as often as it should be then when something like this happens then it is time to have your a/c system cleaned out to remove built up mold and mold is a element that can make you sick and it has bacteria along with it.The thing to do is to have an a/c technician throughly clean it out,it will take them about an hour or two but the end result will be well worth the money and time spent in their work.Result It will be like a good rainstorm after it leaves and the air will be like fresh like in springtime.Get this done asap and your family will love it.
Reply:Most newer cars have what they call a cabin air filter, which filters air from the blower that goes into the passenger compartment. It is supposed to be changed every so often as PMS, but generally not for 50,000 miles or so. You can change it, if your car has one, prematurely, and it should fix your problem.

Reply:It would be better to bring your car to a reputable car aircon technician/shop for them to clean the aircon's evaporator, blower, filters and the car's air vents. Car aircon shops have cleaning materials/chemicals that are effective and efficient in cleaning dust, dirt and odor problems. Good Luck!
