Download zone alarm from the internet latest edition is free also down load AVG anti virus and AVG anti spyware all are free and you wont look back. they detect everything and they update daily so you have latest anti virus and spyware definitions I've used thes e for years with no problem and they are also recommended by computer geeks everywhere.
Reply:You'll find the exact links in my post; I can't do more than that. Report It

Reply:nothing about windows is "fine" upgrade.
Reply:ALWAYS get a 2nd firewall. McAfee has a good one.
Reply:I use the Windows Firewall and AVG antivirus and antispyware from http://free.grisoft.com

If you're on broadband, spend the $49 to get a router.

They have built in NAT/Firewall that will keep almost all hackers out.

Anything from Norton or McAfee sucks.
Reply:buy one like norton its much better this years norton does everything for you ,and its very easy to use. pc world were selling it half price (UK) or go to norton website and you may be able to download it off there site. which will save you a trip to the shop
Reply:I've always just used the Windows one, I also have AVG and Spydoctor installed and I've been ok. I run AVG and Spydoctor once a week to remove anything that may slip through.
Reply:Get zone alarm firewall. Its free and allows better control over it then Microsoft's. If you get it then turn off the windows firewall to keep performance high.
Reply:id defo runanother alongside the windows fire wall

Reply:personal firewalls are complete crap, they are needless on a properly configured system and do more harm than good. there are several arguments about this, do a google search if you are interested about the topic.

helpful is: an external router which uses network address translation. if you are using any broadband internet access, chances are you are already using such a thing. this way, the external device gets the ip address to communicate with the internet, and the only thing visible from the internet is the device, which offers no services and as such is not vulnerable. (as long as you don't mess with port forwarding or DMZ and similar options).
Reply:Go to www.tweakguides.com and download the tweakguide tweaking companion for free.It tells you everything you need to know on how to maximise and protect your computer.Trust me,get it.According to the author, windows firewall is enough.Just make sure you get a good antivirus and antispyware.Running 2 firewalls will make your computer slow.Read the article, for a newcomer it can be enlightening. It covers everything, including the links to websites that you need to go to download free software.
Reply:yeh i would get something alonside it. macfee or norton firewall.
Reply:If you can afford it get a better one. I use one that stops traffic in and traffic out. I am asked when a program like a virus tries to communicate with another computer. I have that on my desktop - but I now have a wireless network. So I have the third party firewall on my desktop - but have to use the XP one on my laptop and it isn't as secure. I have just been warned, because I mentioned another company in an answer - so I'll just give you sources - I don't think that is against the rules - I have done that before.
Reply:The Windows will block incoming but will not block outgoing data. If you get a Virus or Spyware that send data from your computer it will not be blocked. It does work very will blocking incoming.

You want a firewall that will block in both directions. Zone Alarm is an excellent firewall and it's free.
Reply:Take a look at this page, Frank. It shows what products ZoneLabs (the makers of ZoneAlarm) sell. On the right hand side of the page, you'll see that there's a link for the free version of ZoneAlarm. Give it a try. It knocks spots off the one that comes with Windows XP.

You can, if you like, download 15-day trials of their other products, too.
Reply:The guy in the store is a muppet! Try Zone Alarm firewall, AVG Anti virus, AVG anti spyware, and Ad-Aware SE Personal.

They are all free for home users, reliable, and updated regularly. Its daft to pay.

You run one firewall, one anti virus, and two or more anti spyware.

When you install Zone Alarm it will turn off the Windows firewall for you.

The Windows firewall doesn't stop malware on your pc from dialling out. Zone Alarm firewall is free for personal use and stops unwanted incoming and outgoing traffic. You choose which programs are allowed to access the internet. It's fairly easy to use and updated regularly.

Spywareblaster works with Internet Explorer and Firefox. It won't uninstall spyware that is already on your pc, but it will prevent hijacks and other malicious changes to your browser.

Remember to update and run all of you anti malware programs at least once a week.
Reply:forget it..its absolute garbage...run avg free from grisoft.com and you should be ok.
Reply:You really do need a good anti virus and firewall programme to protect your machine, I have used Panda for 3 years and have never had a problem so far, but I am sure any of the other leading products are just as good.
Reply:a much better firewall is zone alarm ....its free ...i use it and have windows firewall turned off ....
Reply:GET ANOTHER.
Reply:Much safer to get a different firewall. Some free ones or not bad (zone alarm) but if you get one like McAfee's it is always being updated. You can get an all in one virus checker / firewall / privacy service from Mcafee. You do need more than just a firewall if you want to keep your data safe. Only problem is that there are annual costs to keep these up to date but currently can get the package for about £30 a year. That seems good value for peace of mind.
