My new puppy is 2 mos old and had a seizure, What do you think happened b/c he already had his distemper shot?

I took him to the Animal ER and they gave him Metacam and Penicillin. The next morning we took him his Vet and they prescribed him clavamox tab. He is doing well and is still playful but I am horrified to see him have a seizure again. The vets don't know exactly what it is and right now they are not ready to do a test. They want to see what happens next b/c he already had his shots and it may not be anything.

Its a baby. Head trauma can cause seizures. It is scary but the best thing you can do is just hold the pup and let him get through it without hurting himself. Many times there is nothing more they can do. SOmetimes there is no rhyme or reason just bad wiring like with people
Reply:If they gave your puppy Metacam and penicilling, they should have known the cause of his seizure. Are they waiting to find out if his seizures are post-vaccination? Did they check him for hypoglycemia? With a puppy this young, I'd be wanting answers, not a vet who wants to see what happens next. Did you let them know he's had another seizure? If not, that's what you might want to do now - hopefully they'll want to see him again. Good luck to you and this little guy!
Reply:Seizures in young puppies are NOT prevented by the distemper vaccine. Generally they are a congenital problem....like a live shunt. Do tests!!!! Two seizures in a dog that young is two too many!!!
Reply:ok well since he's pretty younge it might be that he has a brain problem. maybe someone dropped him when he was really little like 2 or 3 days old. or it could be that he ate something. i read that there was a dog who ate ate a chicken bone and it was sticking straight up in his small intestine and it was cauing him to limp and have seizures and it could also be that since he's really younge and had his distemper shot already but it could be something else too. just don't worry since he's in the vets care he should be taken care of but it's really sad that this happened to a puppy.
Reply:Shots have nothing to do with preventing seizures.





If he's having seizures at such a young age, I'd watch him very closely-if you notice he starts having too many, they will start him on epilepsy medication.
Reply:Could be all sorts of things. Reaction to the shot, ate something poisonous, disease, heat stress who knows?





There's also something called puppy epilepsy that is common in some breeds, they grow out of it but need to be on medication in the meantime.
Reply:Dogs do get epilepsy, more common in certain breeds (Yorkies and Beagles come to mind). Watch him closely, keep a journal of any seizures you see. Time them with a stopwatch. Usually seizures last less than a minute (but it feels a whole lot longer to an owner), if it goes on for 5 minutes, then seek immediate emergency assistance. If they happen more than once a month, the vet may put him on an anti-seizure medication, usually not an expensive drug to take. There's no good test unfortunately, because by the time you get them to the vet they're pretty much back to normal. The more details you can give the vet about what's happening at home, the better he/she will be able to treat your dog. Stressful events can trigger a seizure too, so watch him at stressful times (trips to the vet or groomer, having a house full of company, things like that).
