I've just been given a new responsibility in my job b/c my boss is retiring?

Sorry, I know this isn't R%26amp;S but you guys are great and have helped me so much in the past......

My boss is retiring in July

The new role is to be an administrator (and from what I hear it's horribly time consuming and tedious-has to do with security access thru computers etc..)

I'm currently a secretary and just received a $1500 raise, I've been at this company for a year

I suppose with the raise came this new responsibility even though they didn't make it seem that way.

What do you guys think? I don't mind learning new areas of business but I spoke to the former administrator who did this for 5 years and she said it's not hard but it's tedious and I wouldn't wish it on my enemy.

Anything I can do? They aren't paying me extra for this...

Thank you everyone...

it must not be that bad if she did it for 5 years. give it a try, it might be a totally different experience for you. good luck!
Reply:Sunny, I know that you see the negatives right now, but here are some of the positives. I would give my front eye teeth to be in your position. I have a bachelor's degree and 20 years of experience and I'm looking for work. Right now, I'm considering a job that is over an hour's drive away for less than 30K per year that does not require a degree, because that's the best I can find right now.

The questions on the raise are: $1500 increase per year, month, or week? Big difference!!! If it's only per year, unless you were making very good money for a secretary, they are not paying you very much. Are you doing all of the work of the administrator or just that particular duty?

If nothing else, consider adding this job duty onto your resume, that based upon recognized performance assumed responsibilities for administration of computer security. Also, see if you can keep a measurable statistic to demonstrate your effectiveness.

Did they give you an option on accepting or rejecting this job duty. IF so, it's time to negotiate salary. After all, they don't want to have to train someone new on this.

So, look on the bright side, at least they see your potential and are wanting to let you know they see what you can do.

If you can't negotiate it now, try learning everything you can on this issue and beef up your resume. You may have better job opportunities within a year from other companies (translation: if they don't want to lose you to a competitor, pay you more money). So hang in there for a year with the tediousness and see what happens. After all, if you get a job offer, they will no want to lose you, especially if that means leaving them in a lurch. But, keep a positive attitude on this, you want them to realize what a gem you are to have there and it will pay off in the end.

Congratulations.
Reply:Well first off they did give you more money so that complaint is right out.

Second, and most importantly, jobs are real easy to find. I have no idea why everyone is so hesitant to look around. I do it every couple of years even if I'm happy, and nothing bad has ever happened as a result. I've almost always found a better one, and the few times I didn't, the company found out and made the job I had better.
Reply:Congrads!!!

It may also be a way to improve yourself, and earn higher exposure and status in the near future.
