A. The Republicans were primarily in the North and many of them ardently opposed the spread of slavery. Fremont lost in 1856, but Lincoln won in 1860 and the rest is history. The Republicans did eclipse the Whigs and the main competitor to the Democrats also.

But that can be argued so much - - - there were Republicans willing to compromise they were simply shut out by more astute politicians....
