my current c: drive is 160GB , although 30GB is already used up
Is it beneficial to partition my c: drive of my new laptop, will it help it run faster, etc or not?
If you partition it you will probably lose all your data and you will need to re-install Windows.
It doesn't make it run faster. Usually you put Windows on a small partition and your data on another. So if the Windows partition dies then you can still get your documents off and you can reformat just Windows instead of losing everything.
Reply:generally no ... it wont run faster .... however if u make a small ... say 20gig partition at the end of the drive ... u can install larger programs there that u use alot or work with video ect, and it wont fragment ur C so bad ...
Reply:No it will not really benefit you because you are only using one disk drive. If you had a separate disk drive then you could use your second disk to help speed up your system. If you want your system to move a little faster you could always get a faster spinning drive. Laptops have a tendacy to use 5400 rpm drives, you should really go with a 7200 rpm drive if you can afford too, that will make you system a bit faster.
Reply:if you make a OS partition and a data partition, things may run a little faster. put the page\swap file on the data partition, etc etc.
Reply:It wont really make anything fast. It's just useful to keep you're videos/movies and other content seperate from you're operating system (which I'm assuming is on your c:\)
Reply:There is no reason short of wanting to possibly install another operating syste. All more partitiions are going to do is slow it down.
Reply:It won't speed things up at all.
Reply:Yes it is beneficial and yes it can make your machine faster! Try one partition of about 80 - 100 gig for C drive, Windows, software and work files then the rest as D drive as a back up and put the swap page file on that.
You can get software to partition it, but oyu'll have to ask or search the Microsoft knowledge base for the swap page file thing; a mate did mine!
Reply:my new lappy came with the hard drive already partitioned into 2 80 gig drives it means anything stored in the d drive wont be lost if you need to format and reinstall the operating system in the c drive, i was going to make it one 160 gig c drive but that would mean reformatting and reinstalling windows, i will just leave it alone, anyway may be better this way for security of my documents
Reply:No, it won't speed it up. This facility is useful if you are running two operating systems - eg Windows and Linux - or if you want a seperate area for your data files. It is only really practical to partition a drive when setting up a pc or you are liable to lose all data and have to reinstall windows again.
