Can this be dangerous? I couldn't figure out where the smell was coming from for a couple of weeks, now I know.
I am just wondering if any one else is having this happen? Also, I don't believe that I am losing the freon, b/c it wouldn't be getting cold.
In my new window unit a/c, it has an odor coming from it. Is it freon?
Most window ac's have a filter in it. If that filter is dirty it will give off bad smells. especially if there is a smoker in the house.
Reply:If it is a brand new a.c. unit, it is probably just the smell coming from the new parts. Sometimes plastics and other components will give off a strong odor until they age a bit. Also, freon really doesn't have a smell.
Reply:could be mildew
Reply:This JUST happened to me! It was HORRIBLE! The smell was absolutely nauseating! I assumed it was mildew, so I sprayed it full of Lysol. This did not help. If anything, it made it worse. Then, as a last ditch effort, I sprayed it with Febreeze room deoderizer. Now, to be honest, I don't know if the Lysol just finally kicked in, or if it was the the febreeze, or the combination of the two that did it. Whatever it was, it did the trick.
(But I'll tell ya, as soon as I sprayed it with Febreeze it was all good.)
Reply:Spray Lysol in the air intake.
Reply:The filter might need to be cleaned or changed. Sometimes there get to be a lot of moisture in the inside coils and they will collect dust. This can be a good place for mold to grow.
