How hard would it be to convert one to the other to make my A/C work in this heat!?!?!?!? Can I recharge my current stock air conditioning?
What types of A/C are in most 1991 Camaroes and what is the new system called?
your 91 camaro was using r-12, and there will be a sticker under the hood letting youn know this as well as how much the system holds. My guess is 2 1/2 to 3 1/3 pounds. R 12 is roughly 30 dollars a pound just do the math. R 134a is what they are using now and to converte it over is roughly 150 to 200 dollars depending on what is wrong with the system.
Reply:you can refill it yourself
Reply:O. K. The 1991 Camaroes used 36 Ounces of R12. It is Best if you take it to a Professional...They will change the fittings , Orifice Tube and adjust you low pressure switch, Some flush the system some don't never the less, They will add Pag 150 oil and Charge the system with 134A and use a three point check. i.e. low pressure, high pressure, and temperature inside the car. The general formula for that is subtracting 4o.z. and 10 percent in other words approximately 29 O.Z. of 134A in my experience I have found that the amounts differ greatly from vehicle to vehicle. Good luck.
Reply:you can find all kinda answers, and I've been a mechanic for 40 years and you will have all kinda trouble if you try to change a r-12 to a 134 system.. the oils are different, and will be like tar when they mix. the expansion valve, lines, evaporator, condenser will have a tendency plug up. and you will have to change the oil in the compressor, and i mean every drop,so it would turn to tar..... don't change it,unless you completely replace it all...including lines. some have changed them over and got lucky, but i just don't want you to have trouble .... .
Reply:go to any AC shop and they can change it to 134 if its the old r 12...only cost 25 dollars to switch...r 12 cost hundreds to charge even if u could find it...i don't know why i got a thumbs down...last year i switched my 1989 ranger to r134 from r12,,,no problems...
