I have a brand new, 2.5 ton A/C unit, it's a Carrier brand. It blows no cold air, the outside coil is frozen.

The system blows no cold air. It just blows room temperature air. The unit is new and the air handler is new. The filters are clean. They are matched units (both 2.5 tons and compatible). I went outside and the coil was frozen. I turned the unit off. Why does the coil keep freezing?

If your A/C coils are freezing it's usually because of either low refrigerant charge or insufficient air flow over the coils. Clogged air filters can cause the coils to freeze. If your air filters are dirty long enough then the coils themselves can get dirty and that also can reduce air flow enough to cause coil freeze up. The only remedy is to clean the A-frame coils and to change air filters on a regular basis, assuming that the A/C charge is sufficient the keep the coil running at a decent temperature in the first place.

My guess is the refrigerant has leaked out or the ambient temp is too cold outside.
Reply:there are two primary possibilities. First your new unit does not have enough freon in it. Or second, your filter could be air filter could be extremely dirty. But, overall it sounds like you need to call your HVAC contractor and have him fix the problem.
Reply:brand new? no brainer. call contractor and let him worry about it. usually that happens when no air is blowing thru coils typically caused by extremely dirty filter. i suspect that no air is getting to your coils for some reason. but again, no worry, its still under guarantee.
Reply:Is it a heat pump? Whether or no --- call the contractor and if that doesn't work call Carrier
Reply:Wrong size or poorly installed, get contractor back and have him fix it.
Reply:It needs cleaning
Reply:I would guess it is working to hard for some reason. Not saying you do but is a door open or something?

Try this. cut the unit off until the ice melts. Then set the temp to where the unitl only needs to cool a few degrees like about 5. If it doesn't freezeup again then lower another couple degrees until you are at what you want.
Reply:Is it the temp... you may have the ac on two high?
